Understanding Occlusal Guards

While teeth and jaws are designed to withstand normal biting and chewing forces, excessive grinding or clenching (bruxism) places strain on the teeth, joints, and muscles. This can eventually lead to pain, tooth wear, or fractures.

One of the most effective tools for protecting the teeth is an occlusal guard. Also known as a “night guard” or “bite splint,” an occlusal guard is a custom-fitted oral appliance that protects the teeth and reduces stress on the jaw joints.

At the Center for Oral Pathology, we understand that occlusal guards play an important role in both the prevention of damage and support of treatment for conditions such as temporomandibular disorders (TMD).

What Is an Occlusal Guard?

An occlusal guard is a removable appliance (typically made of durable acrylic or resin) that fits over the biting surfaces of the upper or lower teeth. This appliance is custom-designed to match a patient’s bite, ensuring comfort and effectiveness. Unlike over-the-counter guards, which are generic and often bulky, custom occlusal guards are tailored to the specific patient’s mouth, making them more precise and comfortable.

The Occlusal Guard Creation Process

The process of creating a custom occlusal guard generally includes:

This fabrication process ensures that each guard is unique to the patient and best suited to meet their specific needs.

What Are the Limitations of Occlusal Guards?

It’s important to understand that, although occlusal guards are effective, they aren’t a universal solution.

Additionally, occlusal guards don’t address the root causes of bruxism. For this reason, they are often used alongside other therapies, which may include stress management, physical therapy, and/or even mental health treatment.

Partnering with Healthcare Providers

An occlusal guard is a simple yet effective treatment option that is helpful in protecting patients from the damaging effects of bruxism. While they don’t replace the need for diagnostic evaluation of orofacial pain conditions, they play an important role in managing functional disorders that contribute to the pain and oral damage a patient may experience.

At the Center for Oral Pathology, we support providers in the diagnosis and management of orofacial pain conditions. Once a thorough evaluation and diagnosis is achieved, occlusal guards can be prescribed as part of a long-term care plan.
